Everyone turned to look at us, due to the sound the palm of my hand made, as it hit hard against his face.
“Are you out of your mind?”
He asked through his teeth.
“Leave me alone”
“Mandy, what is wrong with you? I thought we agreed that we will get along, for the sake of the kids”
He sounded so confused.
“Is this your idea of getting along?”
“I wanted us to be honest and upfront with each other”
“well, I don’t appreciate it. You can’t tell me what I can or cannot do. I know what’s best for my children”
I folded my arms.
“Okay, I’m sorry if I made you feel bad. I just don’t want my children to be introduced to different men. We are raising kids here, our lifestyles will play a role in the people that they will turn out to be”
“Okay. Anyway, how are we going to do this?”
I asked, looking at him.
“Us, co-parenting. How are you going to cater for your children’s needs, and how often will you see the kids? We need a routine”
“Oh, yes. You’re right. I’ll give it a thought through the night”
“Okay, no problem”
He got up.
“I know this subject is sensitive, but please think about what I just told you. We don’t want to confuse our kids”
He walked away. Thoko and Trevor had already prepared dinner, so they called everyone to gather around the dining table. After blessing the food, we dug in.
“I am so glad that this is all over. Now Mandiphumle can work on reshaping her life”
Sibusiso’s father said, and everyone mumbled in agreement.
“The kids are so beautiful. They will grow up just well”
Uyinkwenkwezi started crying. I got up and went to attend to him. He was on the couch, so I picked him up.
“Feel his nappy”
Mommy suggested. I felt his nappy, and he had peed on his nappy.
I announced. Mommy got up and walked up to me. She took a nappy from her handbag, baby wipes and baby powder.
“I brought them to hospital when you called me”
“Look, put the baby down”
I did as instructed, but I put him on his side.
“Put him on his back”
She instructed again, and I did as she instructed. I put Uyinkwenkwezi on his back, on the couch.
“take his pants off”
She instructed again, and I did as she said.
She taught me how to change nappies, and how to prepare their formula. While everybody else was now catching up, I was feeding both my babies, one after the other. Later, people had to leave. Desmond walked up to me, as I was sitting on the couch, putting Uyingelosi to sleep.
He greeted. I looked at him.
“How are you?”
He asked. I sighed and looked away.
“I’m fine, and you?”
“I’m okay. I am so excited to a grandfather to such beautiful and healthy children”
He proudly said, and I ignored him.
“Look, we have to run now”
I coldly replied.
“Mandy, could you at least try to care?”
I looked at him.
“I don’t care, and I don’t have to pretend otherwise”
“Okay. I have to go. I will make time and visit again”
He walked away. He just didn’t get it. I wanted nothing to do with him. When everyone was gone, Mommy locked up.
“Thoko and Trevor, please do the dishes. I will go and help Mandy bathe the babies”
“Mandy, I would like to have a word with you, when you have time”
Daddy said, and I nodded. Mommy carried Uyingelosi, and I carried Uyinkwenkwezi. We walked up to my room.
“I hope you don’t mind, we entered your room when we were trying to keep your stuff safe”
She apologized. Why would I mind though? Those people were doing wonders in trying to support me. I was so grateful.
“No, I don’t mind”
I walked in, right after her and we put the kids on my bed.
“Let me prepare bath water for the first baby”
She took their bathing basin and disappeared into my bathroom. After a few minutes, she came with it, filled with water. She connected the heater and closed my door.
“Let’s start with Uyingelosi. Ladies first. I will show you how to do it, and you will bath Uyinkwenkwezi”
I nodded. She showed me how to do it. When she was done bathing her, she applied baby skin lotion on her tiny body and dressed her warmly with a Pink fleece romper. She then covered her head with a Pink and White stripped beany. My baby was so warm, she put her into bed.
“Now, its your turn”
She said, as she went clean bath water from the bathroom. She stood next to me, telling me everything I had to do. I was so careful not to drop my child. I was so nervous to have people who depend on me with their safety and survival. When I was done bathing him, I tucked him in warmly, next to his sister.
“Perfect. Now you know how to feed, bath, change nappies. You are doing well”
I smiled proudly.
“I will do everything in my power to make it work”
“You can also shower and sleep. I will tell Daddy you will meet him in the morning”
“Thank you. I need to rest too”
She walked out. I went to take a long hot shower, and got dressed in my pajamas. I switched the heater off and climbed into bed, next to my children.
“Dear God, thank you so much for the wonderful gift of life. I never imagined how priceless the moment would be, when I finally meet my bundles of joy. Thank you for granting me healthy babies. I love you, for you are a faithful God. Please, continue to protect me and my children, and show me the way. I need you. I rely on you to make the wise decisions in life. Watch over us. Amen”
