I used the back of my right hand, to wipe his tears off. He sniffed.
“I’m a father. I .. Wow!”
He excitedly mumbled and I laughed.
“That’s how I felt too, when I first saw them”
“And the names? Mandy, these are very beautiful names. I love them so much”
“Thank you. I’m sorry I didn’t run them past you first, I just figured they would make sense to you too”
“It’s okay. They are very beautiful names, and I love them. I can’t wait to hold them in my hand”
“We will hold them, soon. They are just a little fragile at the moment”
“I understand. So, when are you guys going home?”
I shrugged my shoulders.
“I don’t know. We haven’t been told yet”
After several minutes of him, just staring at the kids and admiring them, I could tell that he was falling in love with them. He wasn’t the same man who even wanted paternity tests ran on the kids, to prove that they were his. We eventually had to leave them.
“Wow, I still can’t believe that I am a father”
“I also can’t believe that I’m a mother, to twins”
“We can do this, Mandy. We can be the best parents to those two babies”
I nodded in total agreement. When we got to my ward, Sibusiso’s wife was there. She got up the minute we walked in.
“Where have you been?”
She asked, looking at her husband. I greeted, and she coldly greeted back. I climbed on my bed.
“We just came back from seeing the babies. They are so beautiful, so innocent. I still can’t believe that I am a father”
“Why are they not here with their mother?”
“They were struggling to breathe on their own. Well, they only needed to be supported with an oxygen supply”
“Soon, they will be discharged, and we will all move on from this”
He assured his wife.
“Okay. Can we go now? Busi invited us over for dinner”
Sibusiso looked at me when his wife said that. I could tell that he still wanted to hang around for a while, I looked away. I didn’t want his decision to be based on the eye contact that he was trying to maintain with me. I wanted him to decide peacefully whether he wanted to stay or leave.
“Baby, you just got here. What’s the rush?”
“I have already promised Busi that we will make it to the family dinner, so we can’t miss it”
My phone rang, it was Bazukile.
I picked up, while Sibusiso and his wife were still trying to make each other understand why they either had to go or stay. Sibusiso stopped mid sentence and looked at me.
“My love, how are you? I sent Phila to your place, and she was told that you are in hospital and that you have already given birth. Mommy even told us where you are. We are on our way to see you now. Baby, I am so excited. I cannot wait to see my little chaps”
Bazukile blabbed excitedly. I smiled to myself.
“Okay cool, come. I will be waiting. Is it just you and Phila?”
“No, Esona is here too, but she is high so please don’t mind her”
We hung up.
“Who was that?”
“That was my man. He is coming over with my friend”
“Sibusiso, let’s go”
His wife insisted, getting up. Sibusiso got up too. They said their goodbyes and left. Shortly, Bazukile, Phila and Esona walked in, carrying a bouquet of flowers and a goody bag. They all excitedly rushed up to me, hugging and kissing me.
“Where are they?”
Bazu asked. I laughed.
“So you are not here to see me?”
“Baby come on, where are they?”
I laughed. He just looked at me. I explained everything to him, and made him understand that he was only going to see them when we were discharged. He looked down and sighed.
“Oh, okay. I guess I have to wait”
“Yeah, wait buddy, like the rest of us”
Esona hit him on the shoulder, and he smiled.
“Anyway, I’m sorry that you guys had to find out this way”
‘It’s chilled, its not like it was your fault”
Phila rubbed my hand. Esona and Phila went to smoke and I was left with Bazukile.
“Baby, can I ask you something?”
I looked at him and nodded, signaling that he could ask me anything he wanted to ask me.
“Do you see me in your future?”
My smile faded away.
“I mean, do you see yourself married to me, living with me and our kids?”
I shrugged my shoulders.
“Uuh, no not really. I mean, I have never thought that far”
“Why are you asking?”
“I have made up my mind, you are the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with. I want to introduce you to my family”
My mouth hung open.
“I mean it, baby. I want you to be my wife”
“Uhm, are you sure? It hasn’t been long since we’ve met. Maybe you will change your mind about me”
I nervously replied.
“I love you. That’s all I need to know”
“Baby, I love you too. I love you so much, and I want you to be a part of my life, forever. I was just a little shocked earlier because I didn’t think you also thought that far. I thought you were like me”
“I am like you. I think that far, and I get scared of my imaginations- hiding behind the lie that I have not thought about it”
I laughed at his sarcasm.
“Let’s knit our hearts together and never let go of each other”
