After eating the forbidden fruit, I took a shower and quickly got dressed. I didn’t want to be gone for too long, just in case Mommy starts suspecting something.

“Let me quickly shower too, then we will go”

I looked at him.

“No, you can’t. I’m already late as it is”

He smiled.

“Okay, fine”

He disappeared into his bathroom and I followed him.

“What? Are you here to watch me now?”

I laughed as I sat on the the toilet seat. He was getting himself cleaned up, brushing his teeth and all, because he was naughty enough to go down on me.

“Yes, I am here to watch you. I know you, you would take a shower even though I told you that I am running late”

“Wow, Its so good to know that you don’t trust me that much”

He pulled a sad face.

“Well, are you trustworthy?”

He laughed.

“Oh, I will let you be the judge of that”

He walked out of the bathroom and I followed him. He got dressed, took his car keys and we left.

“Thank you for making time for us today”

“Its okay, I had a great time too”

“Mhmm, let’s grab a bite then I will drive you to work”

“No, I’m already late. I don’t have time to eat”

“Mandiphumle come on, your Mommy would want you to eat. Come on, don’t do that to yourself”

I looked down.

“I just.. I don’t want to mess this up. I want this whole happy family setting to last”

“This will last. Just let loose, okay? Have fun”

“I can’t have fun, Bazukile. I have seen worse days, I don’t want to take any risks”

He sighed.

“Okay, I understand. I just don’t want you to live in fear of losing your new family. Relax, these people clearly love you, just be yourself”

“No, you don’t understand. You have never been through what I have been through. Please, don’t tell me you understand”

He nodded, in total agreement with what I was saying. We got to my workplace and he dropped me off. I rushed in, worried that I was really late.

“Where is she?”

I asked Portia, the lady who was assisting customers on the floor.

“She is at the back, working”

I went to her, and she was still sinking in her work. I cleared my throat and took a few deep breaths, trying to calm myself down.

“Mommy, I’m back”

She looked at me.

“Uhm, I’m really sorry I took long. Taxis were giving me a headache and we had a tyre burst, so we got delayed”

She nodded.

“Its okay. What matters is that you are back safe”

I blinked rapidly, trying so hard not to look and sound guilty.

“Go back to work”

She ordered, and I rushed back to help Portia. An hour later, I could not stand the hunger, so I went back to the back room. Mommy looked at me.

“I’m sorry to bother you, but can I have something to eat from the lunch you prepared for me?”

She smiled.

“Of course, help yourself”

She pointed at the lunch box and I went over to it and opened it.

“Sit down and eat. Don’t eat while standing”

I sat down and started eating.

“Whoa! You are really starving hey. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say you didn’t have lunch”

She joked. I cleared my throat.

“I’m sorry, I just want to quickly get back to work”

Her smile faded away.

“No, I am not judging you. That was a joke”

Oops!

“I’m sorry”

She slightly tilted her head to the right.

“Honey, stop apologizing for everything”

I nodded.

“So, did you see the pair of sneakers that you like?”

I looked at her, confused to the max.

“The sneakers. You said you were going to window shop for sneakers”

“Oooh, uh.. Yes, yes. I saw a pair that I love so much.”

“How much is it?”

My mouth hung open and no words could come out. I literally could not think of anything to tell her.

“Mandy?”

She softly called out.

“Uh, its five hundred rand. I will need to start saving for it”

“No, its okay. We can go and buy it over the weekend”

“Thank you Mommy, I really appreciate it”

I ate as fast as I could. When I was done, I got up.

“Let me go back to work”

I walked away. Later, we knocked off, and Mommy and I drove home. She was complaining about being exhausted. When we got home, Daddy was in the living room, reading his bible. We greeted and he greeted back.

“I am so exhausted. All I need is my bed”

“And a massage”

I added. Both Mommy and Daddy looked at me. My goodness, did I speak out of turn?

“Uhm, I mean, if you’re tired, a massage might help relax you. That’s what the doctors always tell me”

I explained, hoping I was making sense.

“You’re right. A massage would do the trick”

“I can massage you”

I offered, seeing that Daddy was not about that life.

“You would do that for me?”

She sounded pretty surprised. I mean, what’s a massage, as compared to the things she was doing for me?

“Yes, you deserve it”

She smiled at me.

“Thank you, I would really love that. Where are the kids?”

“They are in the kitchen, cooking”

One thing I loved about Trevor and Thoko was their unity. They did everything together, hand in hand, side by side.

“Mandy, I have been meaning to talk to you about this”

Daddy said, putting his bible on the coffee table.

“The devil has turned your life upside down, in so many ways imaginable. God has sent you here, to save you from the claws of the devil. He has brought you here, to rescue you from yourself. It is time for you to accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and everything else will fall into place. The Lord wants to free you from all this pain and misery that defines you” ClickToRead: How To Write An Unbeatable Resume/CV To Get That Job You Want.
